Morpho polyphemus PUPAE

from £19.50

The White Morpho Butterfly, scientifically known as Morpho polyphemus, is a fascinating and captivating butterfly species found primarily in the rainforests of Central and South America. It is important to note that there are several species of Morpho butterflies, and "White Morpho" might refer to any one of the white-winged species within the genus Morpho, but here it refers to M. polyphemus. White-winged Morpho butterflies are renowned for their striking and elegant appearance. Their most distinctive feature is their large, iridescent white or silvery-blue wings, which give them a radiant quality. Like other Morpho butterflies, the iridescence is not due to pigmentation but rather the result of microscopic scales on their wings that refract and reflect light, creating the mesmerizing effect. When the white-winged Morpho butterflies take flight, their radiant wings appear to flash or shimmer, making them a sight to behold in their natural habitat or butterfly house alike. These are typically very difficult to breed (their requirements for breeding are probably difficult to replicate outside their natural range) but they still do very well in captivity when pupae are imported. Pupae will typically be available from Belize in July/August. Host plants are unknown but likely include species of Mucuna or Inga, and in a German zoo have been recorded breeding on Callaindria, with larvae doing very well and producing another brood.
